The Vibrancy Dashboard and Portal is a research and reporting tool developed by New Sun Rising (NSR), a Pittsburgh-based non-profit which strengthens under-resourced organizations and provides accessible funding to build vibrant communities. The accompanying Vibrancy Index provides data that shows what culture, sustainability, opportunity, and overall vibrancy looks like in Allegheny County communities. This work started with the evaluation of some existing web-based prototypes and an understanding of internal and external use cases, and lead to the creation of a custom map-focused web interface for interacting with the VI. From there, it evolved into the identification of a need for managing and cross-analyzing related data in ways that would support an organization’s efforts—tools that would provide a deeper understanding of how non-profits measure impact, how they can collaborate, how resilient their programs or organizations, are, and how to communicate and advocate. This entailed the design, building, testing, and management of a full-stack web application backed by a spatial database and data pipelines.
